A wealthy southerner who travelled to northern England with the express intention of capturing the very worst of what his existing prejudices and stereotypes said existed there. His photographs are relentlessly one sided, drawing on outdated "white trash" tropes to paint the people of the north in a negative light, dehumanising them and playing to Daily Mail tropes of dirty scousers. His photographs were taken during the Thatcher era's policy of "Managed Decline" for the North of England and it was almost as if he took a commission from them to justify their views. All of the humour, charm, joy and dignity is stripped from the people in his photographs and he passes it off as "documenting" their lives. As a street photographer myself, who lives in New Brighton, he disgusts me.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267511110647679726.post-14692338528859093052018-01-12T07:39:20.257-08:002018-01-12T07:39:20.257-08:00that's my dad walking the 2 little dogs. said ...that's my dad walking the 2 little dogs. said you seemed a really good bloke Peter. Fair bit of regeneration has taken place around New Brighton the last few years - supermarkets, and chain restaurants. Has certainly helped to regenerate the area but can't help but feel it's drained some of the soul and romance from the place. who knows. live there myself now with my family. cheers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267511110647679726.post-35492129841015211942014-04-22T09:28:47.704-07:002014-04-22T09:28:47.704-07:00I used to swim and play in the beautiful Lido as a...I used to swim and play in the beautiful Lido as a child and was heartbroken to find that the authorities had decided not to save what was surely a national heritage...but that was in the late fifties/sixties. I now live in the South of England and the last time I visited New Brighton (2011) I was horrified as to what Councils (?) can do to a once thriving holiday/day out resort. Ripping the heart out only reduces the blood flow!! I remember my grandma telling me about the tower; now it's just a scraggly bit of grass called 'Tower Grounds' that people walk dogs on. Wallaseyans fought for a long time for something to regenerate NB. An 'ocean dome' was mooted, but shot down by whingy old naysayers. We got a Morrisons instead. I moved near to Morecambe some years ago and the sense of deja vu is incredible. It's the same place, same story of decline, but with a different accent.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3267511110647679726.post-62255864474448840852012-02-29T02:57:49.963-08:002012-02-29T02:57:49.963-08:00Great project Peter,
